The collection was purchased from John Sylvester Drum (1872-1957), a prominent attorney, who served as president of the American Trust Corporation as well as president of the American Bankers Association and sat on the boards of Pacific Gas & Electric and the Yosemite Valley Railroad Company. Along with C. Templeton Crocker he was in part responsible for reviving the moribund California Historical Society in 1922 and was made a Knight of Malta by the pope in 1929 for his church philanthropy. Today the etchings in the Drum collection form an invaluable historical record of Californias cities in the transitory phase from village to metropolis.

The Society of California Pioneers, founded in 1850 by pre-Gold Rush pioneers, is the state's oldest historical organization. Dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and enjoyment of California heritage, the Societys archives include an outstanding collection of 19th and early 20th century artwork, artifacts, photographs and manuscripts.

Lanfranco Amato - Manager of Olivetti Canada
Image
Quote:
Lanfranco Amato has passed away
He was very well known in Toronto, especially for his work at the helm of Olivetti Canada

Lanfranco Amato of Campolevrini, born in 1922, passed away serenely at his home in Toronto on February 14th. He completed his autobiography just over a year ago as a legacy for his son and grandchildren.
The book, published in November 2003, bears the title Experiences, Memories and Reflections on My Life. Amato was very well known in Toronto, especially for his work at the helm of Olivetti Canada.
Amato's wife, Liliana, wrote to us. Her words profoundly echo the extent of the family's sense of loss: "Lanfranco leaves his wife Liliana, who shared over 50 years of his life; his beloved son Sergio, who weeps for his father along with his wife Lucy (Lake Forest, Illinois) and their three children - Lilly, James and Finley - who adored him and cannot resign themselves to the idea that they won't get any more hugs, kisses and caresses from their wonderful grandfather, who was so affectionate and so proud of them.
"Lanfranco also leaves his sisters, Laura and Maria Teresa, along with their respective families; his sister-in-law Maria Cristina, brother-in-law Renato and sister-in-law Donatella and their families.
"Lanfranco was generous, optimistic, noble and sensitive. He deeply loved his family and was moved by the numerous friends who appreciated and admired him and showed him affection and esteem at every opportunity. As a father he taught Sergio everything that was important in life. He was a constant example of righteousness-a quality very hard, if not outright impossible-to find today, let alone emulate. Lanfranco leaves a gap in our hearts that will never be filled, and his memory will be with us forever."
"The last farewell to Lanfranco Amato took place on February 17th at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 354 St. Clair Ave. West, Toronto. Amato was entombed in Lake Forest, Illinois.
"The family would appreciate donations to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, 600 University Ave., Toronto, Ontario M5G 1X5."
In his autobiography, Amato wrote, "Because of my work as an industrial manager, my involvement in a national and international social life, as well as my participation in artistic, cultural and community activities, I was invested with several chivalric ranks, decorations, diplomas and declarations of merit. I am, of course ,immensely grateful to the different promoters and organizers for all of this, not so much for the 'cuteness' of the titles, but for the high honour that they bestowed upon me.
In chronological order, I count: Sovereign Military Hospitaller, Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta-the most ancient among knightly orders. The order was established in the 11th century on the occasion of the first crusade to the Holy Land. Admitted as a Knight of Magistral Grace, within a decade I progressed very rapidly through the ranks due to my active work in several projects of the Canadian Association, first of all, at the Good Shepherd Manor, which helps mentally handicapped kids, and due to my sitting on Canada's steering council as vice-president in charge of the activities of knights and dames of the Order in the Province of Ontario. I rose to Grand Cross of Magistral Grace, then Knight of Grace and Devotion, Grand Cross of Grace and Devotion and, finally, to Knight of Obedience. When I reached this final rank, if I had made myself available to the Order of Malta's central government, located in Rome on via Condotti, I could have obtained a ministerial post.
"Last but not least, thanks to direct intervention by Grand Master Fra' Angelo di Majana, I obtained the Barony of Campolevrini and the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Saint Agatha from the Republic of Saint Marino.
Another knighthood I received in Toronto was that of the Military Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, where I was admitted as Knight Commander. After a while I was also admitted as Knight of Grand Cross in the Sovereign Military Teutonic Order of the Levant. Another honour that made me proud with its intrinsic prestige was admission to the Order of Canada. My admission to the Order took place in Ottawa, in the presence of the Governor General of Canada, officiating on behalf of Queen Elizabeth. King Umberto II, from Cascais, appointed me Knight of the Crown of Italy. Mr. Ernst August Fürstzuer Lippe appointed me Holder of the Princely Family Order of Lippe. I was admitted to the Ancient Scientific and Literary Academy of the Incamminati as meritorious member, and the same went for my admission to the Tiberine Academy (an institution of higher education for the advancement of arts, letters, and sciences). I also became a Fellow of London's Royal Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Due to the intervention of two Italian ambassadors to Canada, I first received the rank of Commander and then, a few years later, the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy. At the Capitol, in Rome, I was presented with the Golden Mercury National Award, a prize given to those involved with economic development and co-operation in recognition of the merits I acquired in my capacity as president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Toronto. I was also admitted to the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, with a ceremony that took place at their headquarters at the Clos de Voujeot castle in Burgundy. At the same chapter meeting, other people were also admitted, including Germany's Foreign Minister Willy Brandt, France's Foreign Minister Couve de Merville and the U.S. Ambassador to France, James Roosevelt. The evening ceremony and dinner were incredibly well organized, full of warmth and significance, music and song, royal food with wines worthy of the Arabian Nights and a large collection of distinguished guests (400 people from all over the world).
"I was also admitted to the Order of the Noble Companions of the Swan with the rank of commander, to the Knightly Association of St. George the Martyr as a member, and to the ancient Irish order Niadh Nask as a member.
"As a member of the Order of Canada I was appointed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to chair ceremonies for the granting of Canadian citizenship to new immigrants. My name appears in The International Who's Who of Intellectuals, published by the International Biographic Centre of Cambridge, England.
"My name also appears in the Hall of Fame of the American Biographical Institute International Directory of Distinguished Leadership."
Amato belonged to numerous corporate boards. In his autobiography he listed twelve, including Olivetti, Riello and Banca Commerciale Italiana.
The loss of Lanfranco Amato will be keenly felt not only by his family, but by everyone who knew him, not only in Canada and in Italy, but by friends, colleagues and associates all over the world..

Legends in the Law

Philip Allen Lacovara
(Appeared in Washington Lawyer, January 2005)

Philip Allen Lacovara is currently senior counsel with the law firm of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP in New York. A 1966 graduate of Columbia Law School, Lacovara has served in numerous capacities in government, private practice, and private business, including law clerk to Judge Harold Leventhal of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, deputy solicitor general, counsel to Watergate special prosecutors Archibald Cox and Leon Jaworski, vice president and senior counsel of the General Electric Company, and partner at two law firms.

He has argued more than a dozen cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, including United States v. Nixon in 1974.

Lacovara was president of the District of Columbia Bar for the 1988–89 term and was general counsel to the Bar from 1985 to 1987.

Where did you grow up?
New York. My father was a trusts and estates lawyer in the city, and our family lived in the suburbs, where I went to a Jesuit high school.

When did you first come to Washington?
Nineteen sixty. At my high school it was frowned upon for anyone to even consider going to a non-Catholic college, so I only applied to two colleges: Georgetown and Holy Cross. I chose Georgetown because I was interested in studying political science. It seemed to me that if you’re interested in politics, Washington is where the action is. I arrived on campus in the final year of the Eisenhower administration, when the Nixon–Kennedy campaign was taking place. That was an exciting time to come to town.

Did you enjoy Georgetown?
Yes, I liked it a lot. My situation was a bit complicated because my wife, Madeline, and I got married during my second year at Georgetown. By the time I graduated we already had one child, with a second child on the way. So it was not your normal college experience. I had to juggle the responsibilities of studying with the responsibilities of being a new husband and a new father.

"Uncle Festing"

Quote:
THE 79TH GRAND MASTER OF THE ORDER OF MALTA

Rome, 11 March 2008 Fra' Matthew Festing, 58, an Englishman, becomes the 79th Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, elected this morning by the Council Complete of State (the Order’s electoral body). In accepting the role, the new Grand Master swore his Oath before the Cardinal Patronus of the Order, Cardinal Pio Laghi, and the electoral body. He succeeds Fra’ Andrew Bertie, 78th Grand Master (1988-2008), who died on 7 February.

The new Grand Master affirms his resolve to continue the great work carried out by his predecessor. Fra’ Matthew comes with a wide range of experience in Order affairs. He has been the Grand Prior of England since the Priory’s re-establishment in 1993, restored after an abeyance of 450 years. In this capacity, he has led missions of humanitarian aid to Kosovo, Serbia and Croatia after the recent disturbances in those countries, and with a large delegation from Britain he attends the Order’s annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with handicapped pilgrims.

Educated at Ampleforth and St.John’s College Cambridge, where he read history, Fra' Matthew, an art expert, has for most of his professional life worked at an international art auction house. As a child he lived in Egypt and Singapore, where his father, Field Marshal Sir Francis Festing, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, had earlier postings. His mother was a member of the recusant Riddells of Swinburne Castle who suffered for their faith in penal times. He is also descended from Sir Adrian Fortescue, a knight of Malta, who was martyred in 1539.

Fra' Matthew served in the Grenadier Guards and holds the rank of colonel in the Territorial Army. He was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen and has served as her Deputy Lieutenant in the county of Northumberland for a number of years.

In 1977 Fra' Matthew became a member of the Order of Malta, taking solemn religious vows in 1991.

As well as his passion for the decorative arts and for history, for which his encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of the Order is legendary, as is his very British sense of humour, Fra' Matthew spends any free time possible in his beloved Northumberland countryside.

For instance, in 1997 a right-wing Catholic, Dr. Robert Prantner, wrote that the Jews should apologize for the crucifixion of Christ and for the so-called 'ritual murder' of Anderl von Rinn centuries ago. He then still held the exalted post of 'Extraordinary Envoy of the Knights of Malta.' He was, however, thereafter relieved of this position by the Order for 'reasons of health.'"

Jewish groups blast pope's plans to meet
antisemitic envoy

By ELLI WOHLGELERNTER and KARL PFEIFER

JERUSALEM (June 19) -- Jewish groups are outraged
over Pope John Paul II's plans to meet today with
a professor of theology who has accused the Jews
of ritual murder.

The pope's three-day visit to Austria is to
include a meeting with the Vienna-based diplomatic
corps, whose members include Dr. Robert Prantner,
envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary
of the Knights of Malta.

In a December 5 article in the Austrian
publication Zur Zeit Prantner argued that rather
than the Catholic Church apologizing to the Jews
for centuries of antisemitism, the Jews should
apologize for "their deplorable crimes... against
Catholic children like the holy martyr-child
Anderl von Rinn, against adults in the days before
Easter... and for the blood of murdered
Christians, spilled by Jewish hands, which cries
to heaven, too."

Efraim Zuroff, head of the Simon Wiesenthal
Center's Israel office, said "this theologian,
Prantner, is basically saying that the blood libel
is true - we're in 1998 for God's sake! This is
outrageous. This is taking us back to the Middle
Ages. This guy is the antithesis of everything the
present pope has worked on in terms of
Catholic-Jewish relations and is a dark stain on
the Austrian church unless this person is totally
condemned by their leadership."

The Knights of Malta is a Catholic lay order.
While Prantner is not a diplomat, he is an
employee of the Vatican
, according to Rabbi David
Rosen, director of the Israel office of the
Anti-Defamation League.

"The Knights of Malta is a lay order in which he
serves as their ambassador,"
Rosen said, "and
which still has status within the Catholic Church,
and therefore it's certainly within the power of
the Catholic Church to tell the Knights of Malta
to clip this fellow's wings."

Prantner was a lecturer at the theological
seminary at the Heiligenkreuz monastery, a member
of Engelwerk, a right-wing Catholic organization,
and is a former director of studies at the
political academy of the Oesterreichische
Volkspartei.

"He has some significant credentials within the
Catholic Church," Rosen said. "In certain areas of
academic specialization, as well as diplomatic
representation, he might be perfectly competent.
But that doesn't in any way detract from the fact
that he has publicly on record made some of the
most outrageous antisemitic comments
- and has not
been publicly chastised by either the local church
or the Vatican, despite letters that we have sent
to the headquarters of the Knights of Malta in
Rome."

The blood libel accusing Jews of the ritual murder
of Anderl von Rinn took place in the 17th century
and was used to incite pogroms against the Jews.
It was condemned in 1985 as a falsehood by
Innsbruck Bishop Reinhold Stecher, who also banned
pilgrimages to the Church of Rinn, which had
become a shrine as the purported place of the
ritual murder.

Samuel Jayson LeFrak - Chairman of The Lefrak Organization (Housing Development); Political Centipede

Quote:
Samuel J. LeFrak (1918- April 16, 2003) was a noted housing developer who chaired a private building firm, The LeFrak Organization, which had revenues of $2.8 billion, as of 1999. The LeFrak Organization was also ranked 45th on the Forbes list of top 500 private companies.[1] The development firm is best known for major development projects in Battery Park City, Lefrak City in Queens, and Newport, Jersey City. The LeFrak Organization was founded in 1883 in France, by Samuel J. LeFrak's grandfather, Maurice.[1]

LeFrak grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Erasmus Hall High School.[2] He attended the University of Maryland, College Park, from which he graduated in 1940,[3] with the University's LeFrak Hall named for him. In 1988, LeFrak was honored by the United Nations along with former President Jimmy Carter, for their global contributions through "Habitat International."

As chairman of The LeFrak Organization, Samuel LeFrak presided over one of the world’s largest private building firms. Its development projects include New York’s LeFrak City, Battery Park City, Gateway Plaza and the $10 billion Newport City Complex in New Jersey—one of the world’s largest planned communities. The company also pursues global gas and oil exploration, international financing, publishing and entertainment. LeFrak counseled all levels of government, foreign and domestic, on urban planning and housing tech-nology issues. He received many awards for his work, including knighthood, the John F. Kennedy Peace Award and numerous honorary doctorates. LeFrak's son Richard now heads the company.

Quote:
Samuel J. LeFrak, chairman of The Lefrak Organization, passed away on April 16 after a long illness. Along with William Levitt and Fred Trump, LeFrak was an early champion of affordable middle-class housing after World War II.

The son of immigrant builders, LeFrak accomplishments include Lefrak City, Battery Park City, and Newport in the New York Metropolitan area.

Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler told Real Estate Weekly, "He was a visionary who put his money where his dreams were. He saw Jersey City's potential long before any others in the real estate community. And he made a larger commitment to the city than any other person in the real estate community. And this is just one illustration of why he's been so singularly successful. In the same way that he touched this community, he rejuvinated and brought new life to urban areas all throughout the metropolitan area. Jersey City feels tremendous gratitute for his believing in us."

Mitchell Hersh, CEO of Mack-Cali echoed those thoughts. "Sam was a man of great vision. His developments in New York City. and Jersey City were cutting edge. Newport 'City not only changed the skyline of Jersey City, but in many senses was the first step in creating the 'Gold Coast'."

LeFrak was a trustee of the Guggenheim Museum; an advisory director of the Metropolitan Opera; a member of the Board of Trustees of the Queens College Foundation; and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School. A graduate of the University of Maryland, LeFrak pursued postgraduate studies at Columbia and Harvard Universities; and has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from Pratt Institute, New York Law School, Colgate University, Michigan State University, Queens College, St. John's University and the University of Maryland.

LeFrak had served six presidents, seven governors and eight New York City mayors, in various capacities, including United States delegate to the International Conference on Housing and Urban Development in Geneva; as a special consultant for the State Department; and as a member of the United States National Energy Council. He served New York State and New York City as commissioner of the Saratoga Springs Commission; as Landmarks Preservation Commissioner of New York; commissioner of the Interstate Sanitation Commission for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; as a member of the New York Task Force on Housing; the New York City Industrial Development Corporation; and the Executive Committee on the Citizens Committee for New York City.

He also was a founder of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. Due to LeFrak's long-term, dedicated service to New York State and City, Governor George Pataki honored him by having Nov. 19 set aside as "Samuel J. LeFrak Day," and created a special automobile license plate for LeFrak" "Commissioner Emeritus 1."

Among LeFrak's many awards were recognition and honors from a spectrum of international societies, philanthropies, and cultural and educational institutions, such as being Knighted a Knight Commander by the King of Norway and receiving that Nation's Royal Order of Merit; being Knighted a Knight Commander by the King of Sweden and receiving Sweden's Royal Order of the North Star; being Knighted a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government; and being presented the Medal of Parliament and the Order of the Lion from the President of Finland; the Jerusalem 3000 Medal from the State of Israel Bond; the Knights of Malta Cross of Merit and Honor; the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit from the Republic of Italy; the John F. Kennedy Peace Award; Man of the Year Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars; Man of the Year Award from Queens College; Annual Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews; The Flame of Truth Award from the Fund for Higher Education; and elected to th e Hall of Fame of the National Sales Executive Club.

LeFrak's long-term affiliation and support of the United Nations, moreover, earned him a number of distinguished awards and recognitions. In 1988, LeFrak and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter were honored by the United Nations because of their world-wide work with "Habitat International." The same year, LeFrak presented an address on "Planning for Urbanization in the 21st Century" at the United Nations. The "Distinguished Citizens of the World" award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. LeFrak at a special United Nations Ambassador's Ball in 1994. In 1994, LeFrak also was appointed by the Secretary General, Boutros BoutrosGhali as New York's representative and member of the Advisory Group for the 1995 50th Anniversary Celebration of the United Nations.

At Michigan State University, a new school -- the LeFrak Forum -- has been established to foster studies supporting Western civilization and culture, democratic political principles, and American free enterprise business systems and strategies. In 2002, the American Museum of Natural History marked the 100th Anniversary of the Lefrak Organization by naming the refurbished IMAX Theatre the LeFrak Theatre.

LeFrak is survived by his wife Ethel Stone LeFrak, and children Denise LeFrak Calicchio, Richard LeFrak, Francine LeFrak Friedberg, and Jacqueline LeFrak Kosinski; his grandchildren Harrison, James, Allison, Jennifer, and Dylan; and great grandchildren Cameron and Julia.

Services were held April 18 at Temple Emanu-El. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Samuel J. LeFrak's name can be made to: Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, 1 Gustave Levy Place, Box 1049, New York, New York 10029.

January 30, 2004-- Vice President Emeritus of the Tulane School of Engineering Col. Albert J. "Red
Wetzel recently received the 2003 Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award and an induction into
the Air Force Hall of Fame.

His contributions to the development and management of the Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
and Space Launch Program led to his recognition last July.

Wetzel, a New Orleans native, received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Tulane
University in 1939.

Wetzel recalls his experiences at Tulane favorably. "There's a lot of difference between college and
the real world, but Tulane prepared me as well as I could have been prepared," Wetzel said. "There
were wonderful leaders on campus at that time and they had great influence on me; the professors
were really impressive."

Subsequently, Wetzel served as a test pilot for the Air Corps Research and Development Center and
also served as chief project engineer for Matador, which was the Air Force's first ground-launched
cruise missile.

Wetzel continued his education at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a master's degree in
aeronautical and astronautical engineering in 1950.

Upon graduation, Wetzel was appointed director of the Atomic Program for Guided Missiles for the
Army, Navy and Air Force for the Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C. This led to his next
appointment, technical executive to the assistant to the president, then Harry Truman, and director of
Guided Missiles, also in the office of the secretary of defense.

He served as the director of the Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program from 1958 until 1961.
During this period, Wetzel transformed this program from a concept into an actual operation. His
leadership during his tenure as director helped advance the missile program due to progress made in
the guidance system, fuel technology and use of underground launch silos for global missile reach.
Upon retirement in 1965, Wetzel returned to Tulane where he became director of Research and
Sponsored Programs and director of University Development.
He was later appointed to other
positions including president for Alumni and University Affairs, assistant to the president and is
currently vice president emeritus.

The United States Air Force and the National Space Club unofficially initiated the Air Force Space
and Missile Pioneers Award in 1989. The award was later formalized into an official Air Force award
in 1997 in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Air Force and the 15th anniversary of the Air
Force Space Command.

While this award recognized those who play a significant role in the space and missile program, such
as Wetzel, it also seeks to educate current Air Force personnel about such figures and increase
further interest in the Air Force space and missile program.

Increasing awareness about the actions of those in these programs is important to Wetzel. "It takes a
lot of courage and imagination on the part of people who make these amazing discoveries, but it
benefits everybody and it's going to be interesting and wonderful to see what evolves from current
research," he said. "These programs have made significant progress in health, communication and
transportation, but people often do not see it even though it affects their own lives."

About receiving this prestigious award, Wetzel said, "I am most appreciative and very humble about
the whole thing. It is wonderful to be in the company of all the people in the Hall of Fame. Those were
very important years in my life and it was a difficult time for the whole country."

Wetzel received a trophy inscribed with his name and year presented as well as his portrait in the Air
Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame.

Engineering Dean Nicholas Altiero expressed pleasure with Wetzel's recent success. "The School of
Engineering is extremely proud to have alumni of the stature of Al Wetzel. His pioneering work helped
make our country the world's leader in space exploration,"
Altiero said.

INTERJECTION - The Alliance Between the Orders of Saint John of Jerusalem
Image
Quote:
The Chivalric Alliance of Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem (Alliance de Chevalerie des Hospitaliers de Saint Jean de Jerusalem)

© Guy Stair Sainty

The Alliance, as it is customarily described, was formed at the instigation of the Johanniter Orders in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden with the subsequent addition of the Most Venerable Order, in 1961. Its stated purpose and aims are "to reduce to silence the enemies of Christ" and "to succour the sick and to help the destitute". [1] The preamble of the statement of 13 June 1961 read "A knight must do his utmost to combat all manifestations of unbelief. He must employ every form of persuasion to combat the enemies of the Church, using all the powers and spiritual forces at his command; a word of encouragement at the right moment, a disinterested piece of advice, a noble action. The Order represents the whole spiritual heritage of its founders; in taking their vows knights assume for themselves, of their own free will and conviction, the objectives of their Crusader predecessors.

The Order is a non-political body of people inspired by the same ideals. They support, exhort and encourage each other, fraternally and chivalrously, in the accomplishment of their duty and their work. The Order unites them in a powerful Brotherhood, giving them strength and spiritual sustenance. The vow they take is a living reminder of the duties they must faithfully fulfill and of self-renunciation; it embodies the entitlement of nobility alike for the Order itself as for its members".

The Convention between the four Orders stated in particular:

I. All Orders of St. John to-day are dedicated, according to their various Constitutions, to the Christian faith and to the work of caring for the sick and needy. The fulfillment of these tasks is largely exemplified in the establishment and operation of hospitals, welfare institutions, nursing schools, first aid organizations and associations for social aid and care of the sick, and like institutions.

II. The signatory Orders of St. John hereunder mentioned are akin to the older Tongues, respect the ancient rule and its underlying purpose, but are each of them free, independent and autonomous, and they now form an Alliance of Orders of St. John to be known by that description.

The signatory Orders of St. John are as follows:

Die Balley Brandenburg des ritterlichen Ordens St. Johannis vom Spital zu Jerusalem

The Grand Priory in the British Realm of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem

Johanniter Orde in Nederland

Johanniterorden i Sverige

With these are to be counted the four Associations in union with the Bailiwick of Brandenburg, namely:

Johanniter Ridderskap i Finland

Association des Chevaliers de St. Jean, Langue de France

Genossenschaft der Johanniterritter in der Schweiz

Johannitarend Magyar Tagozata

III. The signatory Orders are firmly of the opinion that the unity of all Orders of St. John is demanded by history, by their faith and by their common purposes and will fortify their international standing, and that if their efforts and labours are to be effective on the international plane these should be carried on shoulder to shoulder and as a common task.

IV. To enable all Orders of St. John to promote the success of the many international tasks which they undertake and with a view to facilitating also the co-ordination of their various activities, the establishment of a suitable joint committee and of a General Secretariat may be envisaged. The realization of this will only be effected by agreement between all Orders at the time members of the Alliance of Orders of St. John hereby established and if circumstances call for it or make it appear expedient. The organization, duties and powers of these bodies will be laid down by special regulations framed by agreement in the same way. In any case the members of this Alliance recognize that regular mutual contact is desirable.

V. Other Orders, associations, or institutions recognized as Orders of St. John by all members of the said Alliance at the time may with the consent of all such members in like manner adhere to this Convention and become members of the said Alliance. &127

Any member of the Alliance of Orders of St. John may withdraw therefrom and from this Convention by giving six months notice in writing of that intention to all other members at the time.

VII. The word "Alliance" used in the heading and text of this Convention has no political meaning and is not to be interpreted in the light of public international law, and no individual Sovereign person is intended to be bound or committed by this Convention.

VIII. This Convention shall be drawn up in the English and German languages and the text in each language shall have equal validity. HEREBY AGREED AND SIGNED by the Orders mentioned in Article II at the meeting of their delegates held at the Commandery of Niederweisel on the 13th June 1961".

******

Two years later, on 26 November 1963, the Alliance was consolidated with the signing of a joint declaration between the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Most Venerable Order, at St John's Gate, London, by the Grand Chancellor of the SMHOM, the Prince of Resuttano, and Lord Wakehurst, Lord Prior of the Most Venerable Order. The text of this document reads:

The relationship which exists between the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta and the Grand Priory in the British Realm of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem is not always clearly understood, and it is to dispel any misconceptions which may exist that this statement is being made.

A dispute, long since relegated to the realms of academic discussion, as to whether the Most Venerable Order was the lineal descendent of the old Grand Priory of the Sovereign Order, at one time caused division amongst those concerned with such questions. Certain it is that the Most Venerable Order acquired a completely independent existence when it was granted a Royal Charter by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, who became its Sovereign Head.

Since this time the Most Venerable Order has pursued the same high ideals of charity, especially to the poor and sick, which were the very cause of the foundation of the Sovereign Order nearly one thousand years ago.

It will be easy to understand, therefore, why two great Orders, representing the same traditions, pursuing the same ideals, serving the same cause and wearing the same famous eight pointed cross, should have the greatest respect and esteem for each other. It is our great happiness to declare that such a relationship does truly exist, and that it is the dearest wish of both Orders, to seek ever more ways in which they can collaborate, to promote God's glory and to alleviate the sufferings and miseries of mankind.

To supplement this statement, a further agreement was drawn up between the SMHOM and the Venerable Order in 1983. This was signed by Sir Maurice Dorman, Lord Prior of the Most Venerable Order and Sir Peter Hope, KCMG, then President of the British Association of the Sovereign Military Order. It reads as follows:

Twenty years have passed since the signing of the Joint Declaration concerning the relationship between the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Most Venerable Order of St. John, during which the relationship between our two Orders has grown ever closer.

In it the common ideal of the struggle in the defense of our suffering brethren was affirmed and the amity between the signatory Orders was acclaimed especially the common wearing of the eight-pointed Cross of St. John.

The last two decades have seen an increase in the world-wide suffering of our brethren, our response has likewise expanded. The banner of our eight-pointed Cross has been flown increasingly where-ever in the world sickness or distress have made demands upon us. Our ties are strong and our purpose to help Our Lords the Sick identical. We are pleased to record our joint efforts to help the elderly which have already seen the creation of Alms Houses in Sussex and Wales.

We are also united in one fight against False Orders, those self constituted and self styled groups which lack both authenticity or legitimacy of origin but variously describe themselves as an "Order of St. John" or an "Order of Malta". However the Johanniter Orden in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands is a legitimate and honoured ally.

We pledge ourselves anew to carry into the Twentyfirst Century the historical aims and obligations of our Orders.

The most recent agreement between the five Orders culminated in a further statement which clarifies the difference between those Orders which are recognized as such by the Sovereign authorities of the countries in which they are based and the self-styled "Orders of Saint John" whose pretension to be Orders of Chivalry are unrecognized by such sovereign authorities. Confirming the close and friendly relations between the five Orders, this statement reads as follows:

THE ORDERS OF SAINT JOHN

With the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta which is Roman Catholic, the four non-Catholic Orders of St. John provide a Christian answer to the problems of a troubled and materialistic world. They have a common devotion to a historical tradition and a unique vocation: the lordship of the sick and the poor. They strive to realize their aim by mutual collaboration as well as by their own works. They are the only Orders of St. John which may legitimately use that name.

The Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem had its origins in Jerusalem in the late eleventh century and was recognized as an Order by Pope Pascal II in 1113. From that date it was a religious Order. Its members took monastic vows and lived according to a religious rule.

In the course of its history it developed a class of knights who took no vows, while knights belonging to the first class continued to be professed religious. The Order, therefore, uniquely combined and still combines within itself the nature of a religious Order and an Order of chivalry. In the former capacity it was and still is subject to the laws of the Church. The Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (generally known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) is this Order. It is widely recognized as a sovereign subject of International Public Law. It has five Grand Priories, three Sub-Priories and thirty-seven National Associations throughout catholic Christendom. Since 1834 its extra-territorial headquarters have been in Rome. The Grand Master is H.M.E.H. Fra' Angelo de Mojana di Cologna.

Four non-catholic Orders of St. John of Jerusalem are recognized by their sovereign authorities in the countries in which they are based. They are:

Die Balley Brandenburg des Ritterlichen Ordens Sankt Johannis vom Spital zu Jerusalem (generally known as Der Johanniterorden). Besides seventeen Associations in the Federal Republic of Germany, there are Austrian, Finnish, French and Swiss (which are officially recognized in their respective countries) and the Hungarian in exile. Its Headquarters are in Bonn. Its head, styled Der Herrenmeister, is H.R.H. Prince Wilhelm-Karl of Prussia.

Johanniter Orde in Nederland. It was formed as an independent Order in 1946. Its headquarters are in the Hague. Its head is H.R.H. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

Johanniterorden i Sverige
. It was incorporated by royal charter in 1946. Its headquarters are in Stockholm and the High Patron is H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The Grand Priory of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (generally known as the Order of St. John). It has six Priories, two Commanderies and forty Saint John Councils throughout the English-speaking world. Its headquarters are in London. Its Sovereign Head is H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.

The four non-Catholic Orders are associated with one another in the international Alliance of the Orders of St. John of Jerusalem. They are Orders of Chivalry, but they are to be distinguished from most national Orders because of their Christian faith and their traditions as religious confraternities of Christian laymen.

In all these Orders are fostered such ideals of the medieval Order as are applicable to their circumstances, essentially the care of the sick and other service to fellow men.

14 October 1987. Signed by H.M.Em. H. Fra' Angelo di Mojana, Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign, Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, called of Rhodes and of Malta; H.R.H. Wilhelm-Karl, Prince of Prussia, Herrenmeister of the Johanniter Order; H.R.H. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, Landcommander, Johanniter Order in the Netherlands; Fredrik Lowenhielm, Johanniter Order in Sweden; Rt. Hon. the Earl Cathcart, Lord Prior, The Most Venerable Order of Saint John.

The headquarters of the Alliance, whose current President is Baron Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven, Statthalter of the German Johanniter Order, are in Switzerland and it is administered by a Secretary, presently Mr R. Ehinger Krehl. [2] The administration is situated at the headquarters of the Swiss commandery of the Johanniter Order, 15 Aeschenvorstadt, CH-40511 Basel, Switzerland.

Quote:
Aims of the Order

The main aim of the original Order of the church, some 900 years ago, was to give help to the sick and needy. At the dawn of the 21st Century, that is still at the core of the mission of the modern Christian Orders of St John in Europe and around the world. As non-political bodies, whose members are inspired by much the same ideals as their mediaeval predecessors, they support and encourage each other, fraternally and chivalrously, to carry out their duty and their good works. The Orders unite them in a powerful organisation, giving them strength and spiritual sustenance. The vow they take reminds them of the duties they should fulfill pro fide et pro utilitate hominum (for the faithful and to assist those in need)
